If you didn’t know, there’s a new star in Hollywood and her name is Kiki Layne. You may recognize her from the highly anticipated feature film, ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ based on the novel by James Baldwin. In the film, Kiki stars as a lead character, Trish.
Outside of her acting chops, Kiki has caught my eye with her overall style. She wears beautifully designed gowns with soft colors most of the time but I’ve been particularly intrigued by the styling of her natural hair. It’s not often that we see many Black women sporting their natural tresses on the red carpet so Kiki has been a breath of fresh air.
Her styling and hair have both earned her spot as my next Style Star (check my last Style Star feature here). Let’s take a look at 5 of my favorite red carpet looks from Kiki Layne:
Golden Globes 2019
My first red carpet look is Kiki in Dior Haute Couture. The fabric and exposed middle made her look like a 2019 Disney princess. She wore her hair in twisted sections gathered to the crown of her head to form a bun.
After leaving the Golden Globes, Kiki headed over to the InStyle afterparty in this green ensemble. Keeping with the sheer and light fabric theme of the night, this dress is stacked with ruffles from neck to thigh.
At her first Oscars award show, Kiki wore a light pink gown. The statement piece of the entire look rested on the back of the gown. The dress had a huge bow to complement the cutout above the bust area. Her hair was styled into an updo with a braided crown and bun.
Critic’s Choice Awards
One thing I’ve noticed about many of Kiki’s looks is that the dresses she wears are complementary of her figure. They almost always emphasize her long legs and striking shoulders. This look gives a peek at her leg with a side spit and the neckline draws attention to her shoulders. For this style, Kiki’s hair was worn in a long textured faux pony.
To bring this to an end, I thought I’d share one of Kiki’s most bold looks. This fuchsia pink gown was a beautiful contrast to her more tailored looks. This gown had beautiful texture and detail with a sweetheart neckline.
As you can see, Kiki Layne is already a Style Star in her first year on the red carpet. I look forward to her upcoming projects and more beautiful ensembles on and off the red carpet.
See you in the next blog post!
